A government medical officer in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, Dr Kanchan Shirish Madar, has been arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 4,500 from a pregnant woman for an abortion pill kit.
The agency told the court that he is the "mastermind" and the handler of the arrested suspects.
Date, a 1990 Indian Police Service officer of the Maharashtra cadre who once sold newspapers in Pune to financially support his family, was honoured with the President's Police medal for gallantry for his role in what has come to be known as the 26/11 attack.
There were reports that the Bharatiya Janata Party leader complained of high blood pressure and sugar levels and a doctor was called to examine him.
